Kunstwerkstatt – the art workshop
Located in the old town of Monheim, this lovingly renovated villa from the Wilhelminian period is now a house for contemporary art. The art workshop, or Kunstwerkstatt, is a place for meeting, communicating and being creative together. Everything revolves around participatory art, i.e., art that is not just something to look at, but to take part in, too.
The art projects initiated here usually take place in urban spaces. There are both planned activities, which interested parties can register for in advance, as well as spontaneous, unannounced interventions. Art projects are created for everyone and with everyone. The focus is on the dialog between artists and local observers. As the audience is turned into the actor, everything offered by the art workshop is free of charge.

The art-vending machine
The art-vending machine installed on the outer wall of the art workshop is an interactive sound and light installation: as soon as you insert the required amount of money, the steel housing inside produces sounds and noises. The small windows that once displayed the tokens inside the artistically redesigned cigarette vending machine are dynamically and colorfully illuminated. Triggered by the coin insertion, a short choreographed sound and light sequence is created, which stops when the drawer is pulled out.
The vending machine has boxes containing small works of art by changing artists, which can be purchased by inserting money into it. The diversity of the works of art, produced in small editions, reflect the gamut of artistic representation options in miniature format.
The art-vending machine was inaugurated on October 1, 2021. It hangs outside next to the entrance to the art workshop at Turmstrasse 20 and is accessible around the clock.

The art workshop on Turmstrasse is an activity center run by the Kunstschule Monheim am Rhein, the city’s art school.
