An attractive city center offering shopping, food, drink and art

Located the heart of Monheim, the newly designed city center under the brand label “Monheim Mitte” offers a very stylish way to shop and relax a while. The result is already a shopper’s paradise with a variety of stores, eateries and modern art – and it’s continuing to grow! In the center of the Eierplatz square, children can romp on a playground with intricate sculptures and a water feature designed by artist Jeppe Hein. Meanwhile, the grown-ups can take a break and enjoy some of the food and drink that’s on offer around the square. The same water feature can also be found in front of Rockefeller Center in New York. But in Monheim am Rhein, on Eierplatz square, it is – of course – not round but egg-shaped, as is fitting for a site that is called "Egg Square." But that’s not all! You can carry on shopping along the boulevard, on Eierplatz square and Heinestrasse, past the City Hall via Alte Schulstrasse and right into the historic part of the town.

Shopping experience

Go on a shopping spree and get the clothes and shoes, cosmetics and jewelry, books and home accessories you want. Stores from established chains as well as owner-operated boutiques with hand-picked assortments that aren't available everywhere await you here.

Food and drink

There’s something here for every taste: from exotic Asian cuisines to home-style cooking via Mediterranean Greek and Italian cuisine, from sandwiches to filling doner kebabs via juicy burgers. Or would you prefer a delicious ice-cream or a slice of cake? Be it breakfast, lunch or dinner followed by a cocktail, the bakeries, snack bars, cafés and restaurants in the modern heart of the city all await you. And when the weather is nice, enjoy the lively atmosphere and the public works of art from one of the city’s sunny outdoor areas. You can experience art and culture completely free of charge here – but, with a view to the sensual experiences and what you gain from them, they are certainly not for nothing.

Art you can experience, touch and play with

Monheim Mitte has been enriched by various works of art by internationally renowned artists: Tony Cragg, Mischa Kuball and Jeppe Hein have works of art displayed in prominent locations in the middle of the city center. They are there for everyone to view, experience, photograph and discuss.

One special highlight is the Social Playground Monheim by artist Jeppe Hein, which is both a work of art and a playground. Here and in the adjacent water pavilion with its 2.5-meter-high water fountains, playing and romping around are expressly encouraged.

Free parking

Monheim Mitte is easy to reach by car, as there are around 600 parking spaces in the city center where you can park for up to three hours free of charge. A large share of the parking spaces is located in the Rathauscenter underground parking lot and Heinestrasse parking lot.

Free Wifi

Numerous WiFi hotspots in the city center provide visitors with good reception and a fast network. Simply activate the WiFi receiver on your smartphone or tablet and dial in to the free “StadtMonheimamRhein” network.

Restrooms

In the Rathauscenter shopping mall, there are modern public restrooms with a changing table. There are also barrier-free restrooms here.

What is still to come?

The expansion of the city center is still ongoing. In a second construction phase, the “Monheimer Tor” shopping mall building will be expanded and modernized. Besides further stores and restaurants, a hotel and a modern movie theater will open here in mid-2024. Additional parking spaces will round off the amenities. Stay tuned!

Let yourself be enchanted! From December 1, 2023, to January 7, 2024, free ice-skating fun with a gourmet Alpine hut and atmospheric decorations invite you to really get into the Christmas spirit. This year, the traditional Christmas market will take place on the second and third weekends of December.

There are plenty of culinary delights to discover in Monheim Mitte: from breakfast and lunch to evening dining pleasures followed by cocktails. When the weather is nice, inviting terraces entice you to linger a while and contemplate the works of art on display here.

Three slender, dark-colored columns rise dynamically into the air and draw attention to themselves at Ingeborg Friebe Square. As the title of the work "Points of View" suggests, the impression of the work of art changes depending on the angle from which one approaches it.

The "monheim_cube" is situated in the newly designed city center. It transforms the space through light and sound effects and extends further into the urban area by means of three additional segments that point the way to the center.

Monheim’s autonomous buses of the A01 line take you from the bus station in Monheim Mitte to the Rheinbogen Landscape Park via the old part of town. Up to eleven passengers can be transported at a still rather leisurely pace. This is where you can experience the mobility of tomorrow today. Hop on board!
