Open Monument Day 2026
September 13, 2026
On Open Monument Day in Monheim am Rhein, numerous doors and gates leading to exciting sights and historical monuments – some with a very special program of activities – will be thrown open for visitors. Haus Bürgel, which belongs to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is always part of it all.
Open Monument Day at Haus Bürgel
On Sunday, September 13, 2026, Haus Bürgel will once again celebrate Open Monument Day with a full day of activities. From 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., there will be plenty to see and do for the whole family, and admission is free. Come experience 2,000 years of history up close.
The Roman Museum will be open throughout the day, with free guided tours. Outside, a Roman encampment will bring the past to life with live demonstrations on the meadow in front of the fort. Reenactors in historical clothing will show visitors what everyday life was like for Roman soldiers. You can also get hands on by making your own Roman gear or trying spear throwing and crossbow shooting. Free tours of the historic kitchen garden will introduce visitors to herbs used in Roman times.
There’s plenty for nature lovers, too. Join a pond safari to discover the underwater world of the Urdenbacher Kämpe, or learn about sustainability in a crash course on worm composting. A variety of local information booths and vendor stands will offer even more to explore and try. Children can pick up an explorer card and collect stamps as they make their way around the grounds. Collect ten stamps and you’ll be entered into a drawing for the chance to win some great prizes.
Other highlights include pony rides and the popular horse drawn wagon rides with the Reuter family’s draft horses. And when it’s time for a break, you’ll find fresh bread baked in the Roman oven, cakes, waffles, ice cream, and savory dishes ranging from Flammkuchen to potato pancakes. Much of the food is made with regional, organic ingredients.
